Gynecologic Surgery Q & A

What is gynecologic surgery?

Gynecologic surgery refers to any procedures the team at Mistye Taylor, M.D. performs on your reproductive organs. The skilled team performs all procedures at either Tristar Stonecrest Medical Center or The Physicians Pavilion Surgery Center, both located in Smyrna.

But these skilled female care providers only recommend surgery to manage your gynecologic condition when medical interventions fail or are unable to achieve the desired results.

How is gynecologic surgery performed?

The team at Mistye Taylor, M.D. uses a variety of surgical methods when performing gynecologic surgery, including:

Traditional open surgery

During traditional open surgery for a gynecologic condition, your surgeon makes a large incision in your lower abdomen, cutting through skin, fat, and muscle, to gain access to your reproductive organs.

Then they perform the necessary procedure.

Laparoscopic surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique. Instead of making a large incision through your lower abdomen, your surgeon makes a small incision to insert a laparoscope into your abdomen.

The laparoscope is a lighted surgical camera that allows your surgeon to see your reproductive organs on a computer monitor. Then, they make additional small incisions to insert the surgical tools needed to perform your surgery.

da Vinci® robotic surgery

The da Vinci robotic surgery combines minimally invasive surgery with advanced robotic technology, performing complex procedures through even smaller incisions and with better precision. This is one of the most advanced gynecologic surgical tools available.

Minimally invasive procedures

The team at Mistye Taylor, M.D. also performs other types of minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries.

This includes endometrial ablation (to treat heavy menstrual bleeding) and hysteroscopy (to evaluate your uterus and remove polyps and fibroids), which are performed through the vaginal opening.

What are the types of gynecologic surgery?

The team at Mistye Taylor, M.D. performs many gynecologic surgeries to address many female care needs. Some of the surgeries include:

  • Dilation and curettage
  • Biopsies
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) to remove abnormal cervical tissue
